Innanzitutto il significato dell'espressione: Wand è bacchetta, Elder vuol dire “maggiore” nel senso di “più anziana”, o anche più autorevole. A questo Phoenix aggiunge una cosa che non sapevo:

Il termine Elder Wand ha una sfumatura intraducibile in italiano, perché "elder" può avere due significati. Infatti "elder" può voler dire sia "più vecchio" che "sambuco" (e noi sappiamo che il tipo di legno usato è importante al fine delle proprietà della bacchetta).

Un altro lettore ha scritto: non sono riuscito a capire il perchè Draco Malfoy possedeva l'Elder Wand ed Harry ne è entrato in possesso senza uccidere il vecchio proprietario.

Al che rispondevo che il modo di diventare legittimo padrone (true master) di una bacchetta altrui è sconfiggere chi la possedeva. Questo però dovrebbe valere non solo per la Elder Wand, ma per tutte le bacchette. Per questo la bacchetta di Hermione non funziona per Harry, e invece la bacchetta di Draco funziona.

Draco Malfoy non ha mai messo le mani sulla Elder Wand. Piuttosto, ha acquisito il diritto di usarla, allorché ha disarmato Silente alla fine del Principe Mezzosangue. Da allora, la Elder Wand sa di essere stata sconfitta dalla bacchetta di Draco e riconosce in essa la sua vincitrice. Bacchetta Maggiore?). Il problema è che prima di disarmare Voldemort Harry non ha ancora sconfitto nessuno che usasse la Elder Wand.
